Laskar Pelangi & Sang Pemimpi

2 Awesome Indonesian movies. Script, check!. Acting, Check!, Technique, Check!.

Both movies are adapations of Andrea Hirata's first 2 Novels of the series of 4. The formula works because the viewers are able to empathize with the characters. The direction of the story focuses on hope, instead of most movies which tend to 'milk' the sadness, or Derita Sengsara.

As humans, we empathize more to people who are being strong against hardships, or at least try to be strong. Because we look up to this people and we tend to look at ourselves and realize how relatively easy things are for us.

We need more movies like this.

Unfortunately, can't find DVD copies around in KL. Had to ask a friend to ask his friend in Indonesia to buy and post. If any of you find it. Do let me know.

Out.

Pattern

Been a while.

Tried doing 1 thing per day for 30 days. so far none achieve 30 day yet. hehe. Sort of lost track after a while. since ada yang alternate days.

But it is a good thing. At least you get that feeling of self fulfillment. And you know you are doing something new other than your mundane life.

Yes, how ever exciting your life might be, after a while, it will get to a point that you notice there is a cycle, a pattern, if you will.

And sometimes, you just want to break that cycle. Just because you can.

Exam time tables are out!

Hey ho! Exam time tables are out! Mine is 17,18, and 23rd May.

Not too worried though. I am too distracted by the fact that this may be my last academic exam in my whole entire life. Haha.. classic Tapai, always seeing things in a dramatic way.

ANyways, have to get back to work now. I have 1 preparatory report that is very important due in 1 weeks time! and i have only started page 3 out of 20!. Heheh.. Yes.. yes Subbu... i need this adrenaline rush, so that's why i prefer to start late. To illustrate the cruciality (ada ke perkataan ni?) of this preparatory work, if i dont come up with a satisfactory background reading and presentation, i will NOT get a masters, but a higher diploma instead. Scary huh..

OK now back to workk!!!!!!! Sorry guys, u will have to wait till after exams for the Eurotrip pics. I am now too occupied dealing with both Academic and also curricular stuff. Itu la.. Elin has warned me not to be too active. Hehe.. But sorry lah Elin, my hands are itchy and they cannot be left alone. (why does this sound dirty.. dammit).

Owh.. Malaysian Nite is drawing near.. rehearsals have been marvellous so far! DO come for Malaysian nite.. it's on the 28th of April. Expect to be mesmerized by the talents of actors and dancers! :).

Ok.. Back to workkk... arrrghghh!..(slaps face to gain conciousness)

MALAYSIAN NIGHT 2007 : Audition for Actor/Actresses

Hello everyone,
Just to remind everyone that we will be holding an audition tomorrow in our search for actors and actresses for our Malaysian Night play.

MALAYSIAN NIGHT AUDITION (FOR ACTORS AND ACTRESSES ONLY)
Venue: Room 3, Student Union
Date: 16th February 2007 (This Friday)
Time: 3pm-7pm

The gist of the play:
"CANARY"
Set in a time, not so long ago, this story tells of three friends who come from utterly different backgrounds, and yet are united with an unbreakable bond forged from the moment they were born. Like any 15 year-olds, Zak, Suet Ray, and Shar thought that they had the world under their feet, but unbeknownst to their innocent minds, a night at a haunted shack changes Zak's life forever...
This is a story about belonging, friendship, and self-identity.

The Characters

Zakrin
:
A good-natured Malay boy who is filial to his mum and has a passion for Mother Nature, but plagued by a cumbersome ideal that he has to put the state of poverty he and his mum are in to an end. And when he stumbles upon this haunted shack, he is changed and no one sees him again after that night... 5 years later, Zak returns to the village, rich and powerful, but evidently, has forgotten his roots...

Suet Ray
: An innocent and kind-hearted girl from a wealthy Chinese family. She was born with a lisp and was especially cheeky when she was young, but when she is all grown up, she overcomes her lisp, blossoms into a beautiful lady and yet, so unaware of her intoxicating features. She has missed Zak in those 5 years, and when she sees him again as a totally different person, she is pained and saddened...

Shar
: Flirtatious Indian, even when he was a young boy. Very particular about his hair and complexion, mischievous, a comic relief for his other two more serious counterparts. Loves to go to the disco, typically falls for a girl during a dance party...

Suet Ray's and Shar's mums

Zak's mum: Speaks Malay, easily contented, patient, forgiving, and makes Nasi Lemak for a living.

Suet Ray's dad: kind, humorous and a worldly man who has travelled around the world for business.

Ka Ming: Suet Ray's love interest; was a young boy hand-picked by Suet Ray's dad to become his protege. As a result, he has been travelling around the world with her dad. He received a largely Western education, so he displays some awkwardness when it comes to local/Chinese culture.

Karina: Shar's love interest; used to be a buck-toothed girl bullied by the boys but has turned into a beautiful swan. As a result of those horrid years of being looked down upon, she has developed a steely front, although it encourages the guys on to pursue her more than deter them. (This character requires no dialogue, but please be informed that she will be dancing)

Siti: Zak's love interest. When Zak was young, he used to leave trinkets outside Siti's place; a self-assured woman later on, who plays a role in persuading Zak to repent on his deeds...

Mr. Robinson: An Englishman in Malaysia! Complacent, fun-loving. Loves hanging out with the hot chicks and basically is Zak's co-worker/partner when he eventually comes back to the village.

Abstract From the Quran : revised

Note : If this is too long, just read the last paragraph.

Assalamualaikum and Happy new Islamic Year to All. Yes, it is again Awal Muharram, the start of the new Islamic Calender Year which is marked upon the HIjrah of the Muhajirin to the Madinah.

A brother gave a talk last night, and it was a very moving speech that got me to start thinking on a few things. One of the things he mentioned that Islam is the key solution to all the problems (through Al-Quran and Sunnah). He was saying that We have to give credit to the westerners on their achievements on technology. They (westerners) have went through a lot, from the separatism of the church from the state, which led to more thinking that led to the Industrial revolution. These experiences has made them achieve lots in terms of technology, maturity of law such as equality and such. However, it is said that they are still lack of the key thing, which is the soul searching of oneself, to feel complete. That is why there is a period called the romanticism, where there were emergences of thinkers who started thinking : what is the meaning of life?

That is where Islam comes in. Brother Asad related that Islam during the time of Rasulullah s.a.w there were two significant phase of Islam, which were Makkah and madinah. Makkah was a time to complete the 'inner self' which more toward strengtehing the iman and takwa. . Madinah, later on, was about the strengthening of the 'outer' Islam, which was about technology, law, economy, all within the guidance of Islam.

And this framework is still applicable to us now. We need to strengthen our inner self and then the outer part in whatever we do. It is a cycle that we need to go through to become a complete human being. Although the journey for each human being might be different.

The cycle can be seen having a long period, like 'makkah' during puberty and teenage years and 'madinah' during the later, more matured years. The cycle can also be seen in a very short period, as in thinking about doing something for the day, or an hour or maybe a longer duration of project for that matter. Example, organizing a project or student activity with your committee. You would have to assess the inner strength of the committees such as individual skills, priorities, what tickles and what stresses them, and how close the committees are with each other. Given all the inner variables strong, insya allah, the other project/activity tasks and issues can be handled without much hassle.

On a more general note, some might not believe that Islam is not the answer, but they can't really deny the relevance of the framework. Strengthening from within, and then from without.

However, this made me think. I am curious. How did the Sahabah and the Muslims during the rasulullah s.a.w era abstract all the knowledge of Technology, Law, Economics from the Quran and sunnah. And how does one answer the questions of Who is god? Who are the human being? What is the purpose of life? Why are we here?. if anybody knows, do share.

Dari KL ke London.. RM 10 sahaja..

Sumber : Utusan Malaysia
