Studying Film - A starting point

Naked Filmmaker -Film Director Influences

- Really Love film. When you love something you will be really curious wand you want to know everything about it.'

Film Riot - Basic Lighting Set Ups

Lights Film School - 180 Degree Rule - dynamism

- A good tip is to separate the background (if it works with your scene) and the subject so that you have more control over the lighting. The basic idea is to have one practical light, and build the lighting design starting from that source.

Naked Filmmaker - lenses make the director

- You don't need a director who just sits on their as yelling action and cut!. There needs to be sort of thinking, and one of it, is to know what idea it is you are bringing forth and which lense would serve you best to convey the idea across.

What is good?

One very important element of producing is to surround yourself with good people and hopefully give them an opportunity to grow. Definition of good can be subjective.

So then, a producer's definition of 'good' will determine what sort of producer you are.

Medium

At the end of the day. Storytelling started when a bunch of cavemen huddled around the fire communicating stories.

The difference now is that we have the technology to perform the same thing in different mediums be it acrylic on canvas, printing on paper, projection on the screen, or sound wave that comes out of a set of speakers.

Just remember that at the core, we are still telling a story. Everything else should enhance the experience of relaying/receiving the story.

So the next question would be, what makes good story telling. Which style suits better for which medium?

Something to ponder.

Fox Stevenson - All in

No, I'm not going to tell you, something you already know,
I've been doing my time and thinking that I could, though,
We'll go somewhere we don't quite know,
And do things that we can't quite do,
I know that I never want to let go.
I guess I've finally found something I want to keep alive,
So I'm going all in, yes I'm going all in this time.
When I can't look down, you're going to keep my head up high,
So I'm going all in, yes I'm going all in this time.
Well I know what you are,
But I don't know what I need,
Can you show me what perfection feels like?
Cause it's something I can't quite hear,
And it something I can't quite see,
Can you show me what I'm meant to be like?
I guess I've finally found something I want to keep alive,
So I'm going all in, yes I'm going all in this time.
When I can't look down, you're going to keep my head up high,
So I'm going all in, yes I'm going all in this time.
I guess I've finally found something I want to keep alive,
So I'm going all in, yes I'm going all in this time.
When I can't look down, you're going to keep my head up high,
So I'm going all in, yes I'm going all in this time.
I guess I've finally found something I want to keep alive,
So I'm going all in, yes I'm going all in this time.
When I can't look down, you're going to keep my head up high,
So I'm going all in, yes I'm going all in this time.

Crazy

Entrepreneurs are the crazy people who work 100 hours a week so they don’t have to work 40 hours for someone else

Engaging the audience

During the Travel Through Books session we were asked who should we blame for the current state of the Malaysian Film Economy where there is an oversupply of films. Plus, it doesn't help that referring to the supply-demand graph, tickets are a overpriced. Hence no motivation for people to go watch local films.

We were asked to choose only between the two: Audience vs Filmmakers.

The answer is definitely is not as straightforward as you think. There are clearly more parties involved in the local film industry ecosystem like the regulatory bodies, production houses, studios, distributors, sales agents, equipment rental houses, production teams, post production houses and many more.

For simplicity's sake, let's entertain Audience vs Filmmakers. I can't answer this, since both are key to the supply-demand chain. However, if you put a knife on my throat, i would have to go with filmmakers. This is because audience are laymen. Filmmakers are what you call 'ahli', which means people of knowledge. And knowledge comes with a set of responsibilities. Like engaging the market and provide alternatives or enlighten the audience to what it is that they want.

At the moment, like it or not, people want entertainment. This argument is subjective because different people have various definitions of entertainment. Some enjoy purely cinematography. Some enjoy slapstick jokes. However, filmmakers can try to provide some form of quality within the entertainment.

Quality is also subjective. But i think one of the many elements of quality is being able to engage. Which means an audience have to be asking,"What is going to happen next?".

There should at least be some form of story telling where, if all else fails, a 3 act structure would be nice. Some form of context, a journey, conflict, resolution, raising the stakes, and final resolution would be nice rather than a just a series of gags without structure. This would help keep the audience engaged because there is a story to follow.

Not denying that there are other factors  that can engage audiences. I am just saying let's get back to basics shall we? After all, this all started with cavemen sitting around the fire, telling stories to each other. It's just that the medium has changed, That is all.

Mari Berbuka Puasa

Azan berkumandang. Agak awal jam 7:25 pm. Masing2 memandang tengok siapa yang berbuka dahulu. Yakin dan terus berbuka. Bismillah.

Tiba-tiba kedengaran announcement dari penganjur, "Maaf, azan tadi adalah kesilapan teknikal". Alhamdulillah.

Focus and Finish

If you think it is best, do it.

Just have a good reason and know your intention.

Justify only when asked, not as your default people-pleasing mechanism.

You know best. Be confident.

Trust yourself.

Focus and Finish.

Taps.

Explore

The word for 2014 was to explore.

Exploring can be experiencing new things, meeting new people, and reading new books. The new input will shape you and give you a chance to grow.

You can also explore within. Possibly get in touch with your soul. Your Raison d'etre. Your search of God.

Key is to never stop exploring.

Taps.

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.

When making a decision, we need to be clear that decisions may not determine the outcome.

You may make a good decision, but still the outcome is bad.

You may make a bad decision, but the outcome may be good.

Of course, there would also be probability of good decision-good outcome; bad decision-bad outcome.

But the key is to be present. To make a decision with the best information that you have at the given point of time. The key is to make sure you get the most information basis to be able to weigh and make the best decision given the timeline.

Timeline is also key. If not, you would be stuck in a limbo where you can just choose to sit on it. Timeline can come from an external source (i.e.: Boss assignment deadline) or internal (i.e.: self assigned deadline)

Thing is, it is such a liberating concept, where you focus on what you can control, which is your actions, and not be paralysed with thinking about the results. You can make the best decision; example, taking a cab when you are drunk, which is the most responsible and good decision to make. But what if you get robbed on the way?

Point is, there may always be external factors that you can't control. Like how your actions affect other people. Like how people would react to your choice. Like whether if people would judge you. Like if the result would be the same with what your goal was.

So be present.

Screenwriting : Specificity

Dustin Lance Black. He wrote the screenplay for the award winning Milk. He talks about the importance of process and being specific and how being specific can only come from tonnes of research, which may end up not being used.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

11 pm

Watched the movie and it was awesome! loved how the plot developed and how i was brought to questioning whether to root for the apes, or for humans.

Truth be told, i think humans were secondary in the plot. The whole story is the power struggle within the apes.

Not much of a critic, so here goes. Effective scoring, good cinematogtaphy, good acting, VFX all in a good package. No real plothole that i can see, and all character motives were well justified. Definitely has a balance between substance and form.

(unlike some other movie *ehem*Transformers4*ehem* that focused more on the form)

Can't wait for the next one to see how they develop the plot further.

Go watch!!!
